Schauen wir uns einmal an, wie ein Standardknoten entsteht. Es wird schon irgendeinen Grund gehabt haben, ihn auch "Krawattenknoten" zu nennen. Wenn man so vorgetht wie auf den Zeichnungen weiter unten gezeigt, braucht man zwei Kettenenden, die entweder zu zwei verschiedenen Ketten gehören oder aber die beiden Enden einer Kette sein können.
Let's see how one can make the standard knot. For one one reason or another is was called 'necktie knot'. The way it is shown in the drawings below one needs two ends of chain. These may belong to two different chains, but may as well be the two ends of the same chain.
Der rote Kettenteil und auch das gelbe Kettenglied sollten zur Verfügung stehen. Zuerst schiebt man das lila Kettenglied über das gelbe bis zum hellgelben hin. Dann nimmt man das Ende des roten Kettenteils und fädelt nach und nach alle Kettenglieder durch das gelbe Kettenglied hindurch.
Both the red part of the chain and the yellow chain link should be available. First one slides the violet link over the yellow link, going as far as the light yellow second link. Second one takes the end of the red chain part and starts to thread all the links through the yellow link.

Man braucht beide Kettenenden, um eine Kette um einen Pfosten oder ähnliches herumzulegen, wovon man sie nicht abnehmen kann. Sofern man nicht ungeeignetes Kettenmaterial verwendet, kann man die Schlaufe nicht weiten, ohne vorher zu entknoten. Das heißt, daß man das gesamte freie Kettenende wieder zurück durch das Kettenglied zu fädeln hat.
You need both ends free to fasten a chain around a post or the like where you cannot take it off. Unless you use the wrong type of chains, you cannot enlarge the loop without undoing the knot. This means threading the free end of chain back again through the link.
Hier ist also der 'Krawattenknoten' in voller Schönheit. Trotz des Names soll man es sich sehr genau überlegen, ob man es wagen sollte, ihn als Krawattenersatz einzusetzen und um den Hals zu legen. Falls die Schlaufe zu eng sein sollte, kann man sie nicht über den Kopf abstreifen. Im Gegensatz zum Originalteil aus Seide kann man die Kettenschlaufe nicht weiten (um Luft zu kriegen), außer man fädelt das gesamte Kettenstück wieder zurück und hat damit den Knoten komplett rückgängig gemacht.
So here is the 'necktie knot' in full beauty. Despite of its name, please think very carefully before you venture to use it as a necktie ersatz und put it around your neck. Imagine the loop is too tight so you cannot slip it over your head. Unlike the true silk thing, you cannot loosen it again or enlarge the loop (for fresh air for instance) unless you pass the entire length of chain through the link reversing what you have done previously.
Und wie in den alten Filmen, wo der Held den Bösewicht an der Krawatte nimmt (oder war es umgekehrt?) gehen die Chancen rapide in den Keller, wenn sich jemand am roten Kettenende zu schaffen macht wie im obigen Bild. Es reicht alle mal aus, ein einziges Kettenglied zu kontrollieren, nicht notwendigerweise eines in Halsnähe...
And like in these old films when the good guy holds the bad guy by his tie (or was it the other way round?) your odds become less than brilliant if one is starting tampering with the chain on the red end as shown in the drawing above. And it is enough to control just a single link of the chain, not necessarily one close to your neck...

If you just want a free loop there is another way to make this knot. In this case you only need one end of your chain. And any loop you might have slipped off you can undo this way. Now the photo sequence comes first
Mit diesem einen Kettenende wird die Schlaufen 'aus dem Nichts' erschaffen und nimmt bis zur Endgröße zu. Die Abbildung rechts gibt davon einen Eindruck. Allerdings funktioniert das nur mit einer freien Schlaufe. Um eine Schlaufe derart zu entflechten, geht man umgekehrt vor und fädelt das gelbe, hellgelbe usw. Kettenglied durch das violette und zum Schluß ist der Knoten verschwunden, ohne daß man das roten Kettenstück gebraucht hätte.
With this one end of the chain, the loop is created 'out of nothing' increasing its size from zero to its final maximal diameter. The figure to the right gives you an idea how this can be done. Remember, this only works with a free loop. For undoing the loop this way, you may go the reverse way to thread the yellow, the light yellow link and so on through the violet link, eventually undoing the knot without having to release the read part of the chain.
Es gibt zwei nette Eigenschaften dieses Knotens. Erstens hat eine Schlaufe eine maximale Größe;e, und wenn man größer braucht, muß man zuvor erst entknoten. Und zweitens, wenn man am freien (roten) Ende zieht, wird die Schlaufe nicht kleiner.
There are two nice properties of this knot. First you have a maximum circumference of the loop if you have made such using the knot. A larger loop requires undoing the knot first. And second, if you pull on the open (red) end the loop does not get smaller in circumference.

Krawattenknoten
oder auch eine etwas aufwendigere
Gürtelkombination.
