Zusammenfassung - Digest Page

Nachdem meine Seiten zum Kettenflechten bei 'geocities' auch dem Rauswurf von vielen bislang kostenfrei beherbergten Seiten zum Opfer gefallen sind, seien hier die Zusammenfassungsseite und ein paar weitere Seite vorerst mal eingestellt.
      Ich bitte bis auf weiteres um Verständnis für einige ins Nichts zeigende Verweise. Des weiteren werde ich zusehen, daß ich die Seiten nach und nach reaktivieren und mit deutschem Text ergänzen werde.

Nachdem die Zahl der Seiten weiter und weiter angestiegen ist, dachte ich, daß eine Seite mit einer Zusammenfassung durchaus angebracht sein könnte. Einerseits nichts wensentliches auslassend, aber andererseits den einzelnen Seiten nicht zu sehr vorgreifend. Der Leser möge einschätzen, in wieweit mir das gelungen ist.

Noticing the number of pages grow and grow, I thought it might be of interest creating a summary page, a digest of the contents. It should be somewhat comprehensive but kept short as not to preclude the individual pages too much. You may judge whether I managed to collect the essential things.

Man kann Ketten ähnlich wie Seile verknoten oder verflechten, wenn die Kettenglieder von richtiger Gestalt sind, und darüber hinaus auch wunderschöne Dinge machen, welche über die Möglichkeiten von Seilen hinausgehen.

It is possible to weave chains similar to ropes if the chain links have the right shape, and one can do really beautiful things beyond the possibilities of strings or ropes.

Aber man muß auch achtgeben. Obgleich Ketten normalerweise recht flexibel sind, ist ein einzelnes Kettenglied recht hart. Unter Last dehnt sich eine Kette kaum. Und es versteht sich eigentlich von selbst, daß nur Ketten guter Qualität zu verwenden sind.

But be careful. Although chains are usually quite flexible, the chain link in contrast is quite hard. Under force, a chain stretches very little. And it should be understood to only use chains of good quality.

Die auf diesen Seiten beschiebenen Techniken funktionieren nur mit Ketten, die bestimme Maßverhältnisse haben. Zuerst müssen die Kettenglieder weit genug sein, damit man hierdurch wie auch dem Bild rechts gezeigt eine Kette durchfädeln kann.

The techniques described in the pages here only give the results with chains of specific dimensions. First the links need to be wide enough as you need to pass one piece of chain through a single link as shown to the right.

Wenn aber die Kettenglieder zu weit sind, sind die Knoten nicht mehr zuverlässig wie weiter unten noch zu sehen ist. Es gibt eine ganze Seite zu Kettenmaterial, falls man genauer wissen möchte, welche Kette man wählen soll.

But if the chains are too wide then there will be a problem with the security of the knot as you can see below the picture series. There is a full page on the chain material if you want to know more details how to chose your chain.

welches sind geeignete Ketten

Ich nehme mal an, daß schon richtig eingekauft wurde. Das folgende basiert zumeist auf dem Standardknoten, und die Photosequenz zeigt, wie er entsteht. Die beiden Kettenenden können zu zwei verschiedenen Ketten oder aber auch zur selben Kette gehören.

Surely you do make the right purchase in the shop, I assume. Then most of the following is based on the standard knot and the photo sequence should give you the idea how to make it. Two ends of chain may belong to two different chains, but may as well be the two ends of the same chain (sometimes called a necktie knot) as shown below.

Mit dem richtigen Kettenmaterial kriegt man die Schlaufe nicht weiter, ohne zuvor den Knoten rückgängig zu machen und das freie Kettenende wieder zurückzufädeln. Die Schlaufe neigt nicht dazu, sich wie eine Schlinge enger zusammenzuziehen, nichtdestotrotz kann man die Schlaufe auf eine zweite Art entknoten, indem man die Schlaufenweite bis auf Null reduziert - sofern dies möglich ist. Die Seite zum Standardknoten zeigt dies etwas genauer.

With the right chain type you cannot enlarge the loop without undoing the knot. This means threading the free end of chain back again through the link. Although the loop has no tendency to act as a noose, there is actually another way of undoing a loop in decreasing the diameter down to zero provided this is feasible. The standard knot page gives more details about this.

Ein kurzer Blick auf das, was mit einer ungeeigneten Kette passieren kann. Indem man an der unteren linken Kette zieht und gleichzeitig am Knoten herumfingert kann man das Kettenende vom Knoten wegziehen. Natürlich braucht man ein Stück der grünen Kette von rechts und die Ketten hängen immer noch zusammen, aber hat so den Umfang der Krawattenknotenschlaufe geweitet.

Now a short look what can happen with an unsuitable chain. In pulling on the bottom left chain and fiddling on the knot it was possible to move this end chain away. Yes, one does need some length of green chain from the right and the chain is not disconnected. But one could increase the circumference of a necktie loop this way.

Mit geeignetem Kettenmaterial kann man das vermeiden. Bei allen Versuchen, das rote Kettenglied aus der blauen Kette herauszuziehen, sollte man nicht weiter kommen als links in der bildfolge zu sehen ist.

With the good chain varieties this is avoided. In trying to pull the red link out of the blue chain you should not be able to get out further than shown in the sequence to the left.

Auf der Kettenmaterialseite finden sich eine Reihe von Vorschlägen, wie man mit eigentlich ungeeignetem Material zuverlässige Knoten basteln kann. Im wesentlichen muß man die Ketten öfters durcheinanderfädeln.

On the chain material page are a number of suggestions how to obtain reliable knots even with an unpractical material, one of which is also shown to the right. Basically one needs to thread the chains more often through one another.

In etwas anders gelagerten Situationen sollte man auch an Varianten des Standardknotens denken, wie in dem Fall, daß ein Ende der Kette schon irgendwo befestigt ist und man dennoch eine Schlaufe über oder um etwas legen möchte.

In different situations you may want to think of variations of the knot. One situation might be a chain permanently attached at one end and you want to pass a loop over or around something.

Man schaue, welche Länge am Kette man für die Verbindung zuzüglich des Schlaufenumfangs braucht, um die Position des lila Kettengliedes innerhalb der Kette zu bestimmen. Dann beginne man, Kettenglieder von der Wandseite durchzufädeln (blaßlila...). In der ersten Phase mache man solange weiter, bis die Schlaufe weit genug ist, um sie über das Objekt zu stülpen. Wahrscheinlich hat man dazu weit über die gelben oder grünen Kettenglieder hinausgehen müssen. Hat man erstmal das Objekt durch die Schlaufe gesteckt, verkleinert man die Schlaufengröße wieder bis auf das erwünschte Maß (gelbes Kettenglied). Dann fädelt man den roten Kettenteil durch das gelbe Kettenglied.

Use as much chain length as you need for the connection and the loop to determine the position of the violet link. Start threading links from the wall side (light violet...). In a first phase continue until you have a loop large enough to pass it over your object. Probably you have to go well beyond the yellow or green links. Once you have slipped the object through, you decrease the loop size to what is required (yellow link). Now you thread the red part of chain through the yellow link.

Putting the padlock on the end of a chain is feasible most of the time, but chain plus padlock tend to act as a pendulum. Sometimes you want this, sometimes you do not and then this Borromean knot might interest you. The padlock does not stick out too much, does not twist or turn, and even better, when you pull on the chains, there is little force trying to separate the padlock body from the shackle. It also prevents the padlock from dangling around and is a pleasant way of closing a belt. You have to get padlock and chains compatible in size, otherwise this method won't be feasible. But it is worth the effort hunting for the right stuff.

Look at the photo to the right. Isn't this a nice way to decorate your room with flowerpots suspended in mid-air. I find it actually surprising that one is able to do such thing without the need to permanently attach one chain to another. And it should be really sturdy.

How to connect two chains if you need one long chain but there are only two short pieces around.

When you put a loop round a wrist, an ankle, whatever else, it does matter how you thread your part of chain through this specific link. Ok, if you exert a force at right angle, it is less important, but still, better to know about.

The photos show the necktie knot now really being used for a chain necktie. Once more this word of caution about giving it sufficient slack from the very beginning as you cannot widen it once the knot is produced, especially as a neck is a rather delicate part. Unlike the usual necktie this it not intended to tighten your shirt collar; the size of the silk thing can still be adjusted while wearing it.

Well, on the other hand the loop should be tight enough so you cannot slip it over your head, otherwise there would not be much of a point.

You may notice that the three chain links in close contact do form a little tripod, and for comfort reasons it is important that the tip of it points away from your body. For the loop running round your neck take care not to twist this part of chain. It is becoming less comfortable otherwise.

Nothing new knotwise, but the chain loop can also be used for a belt. For sure you do not want to slip your chain belt off. It is a good idea to try different lengths for the loop and make the loop at least two links smaller than the smallest loop you were able to slip off (with some effort).

The interesting part of the waist belt page is not the belt itself, but the part of the chain leading away. This is now the room for wild fantasies. How long is this chain, where does it lead to, and may it even be attached somewhere? How and to which degree of security. Lots of questions one might think of.

The belt combination is a chain belt (some may call it 'Belly Chain') combined with two wrist loops, so you need three pieces of chains. The free end of each wrist loop chain is connected to the belt chain as long as the 'belt' is not closed yet.

The length of chain between the wrists and the belt has been chosen such as to have a little slack in the chain when the arms hang free at the sides. On the left you see what length I did use for that.

Bottom left is the standalone version using one padlock, or better call it 'walk-around' way of securing all this weaving. If using a padlock, I like to use this 'Borromean knot' when connecting two chains.

Bottom right the wrists are kept a little bit closer. Amd why should there be a padlock in the reach of the fingers, if the belt can be closed in the back. Have a padlock or a knot used there, as you like it.

Angenommen, sie haben eine Schlaufe um ihre Handgelenk gefädelt. Dann zeigt das linke Photo, wie es aussehen sollte, wenn Zug auf der Kette ist.

Imagine you have put a loop round one of your wrists.The left photo shows how if should look like when you might happen to pull on the chain.

Handgelenke und Fußgelenke können derart in gleicher Art und Weise gesichert werden. Im wesentlichen geht es um gleichzeitige Sicherheit und Komfort und möglichst ohne ein leicht zu überlistendes Vorhängeschloß in der Nähe. Die Schlaufen sollten gut passen, nicht schlackern, aber auch nicht zu eng sein. Und wenn schon ein Vorhängeschloß ist, dann ein hochwertiges Modell.

Both wrists and ankles (stale links) can be secured the same way. Essentially it is about both security and comfort at the same time without too easy a way to pick the lock. The loops should be snug, but still comfortable and not too tight around wrists or ankles. Then it is important that the padlock is sufficiently tamper proof.

Und falls immer noch Bedenken wegen der Sicherheit bestehen sollten, dann solle der werte Leser doch darauf achten, daß auf etlichen Photos kein Vorhängeschloß zu sehen ist. Ohne ein Schloß kann man natürlich auch nicht üben, ein solches -mit oder ohne Dietrich- aufzukriegen.

Ich meine, daß dies ein süßer Handschellenersatz ist.

And if you are still worried about security, then please note that on several photos there is no such thing as a padlock. So without a lock around there is nothing for practicing your lock-picking skills.

I find this quite a nice handcuff replacement.

Der Krawattenknoten an den Fußgelenken erwieß sich dann am bequemsten, wenn die Schlaufe eng genug war, um nicht über die Knöchel herunterzurutschen, aber dennoch weit genug war, um nicht einzuengen und ein bißchen Bewegung zu erlauben (looser mag zwar anfangs komfortabler erscheinen, aber nur solange, wie sich die Kette nicht am Knöchel verhakt hat).

The necktie knot applied to the ankles turns out to be most comfortable for me when I have it tight enough so the loop does not slip over the ankles, but rests snug above it nevertheless leaving enough room for movements and not squeezing the foot at all (looser may appear more comfortable first, but only as long as the chain has not caught on the ankle acting as a hook...).

Die Kombination unmittelbar rechts verwendet sechs Knoten und ein Schloß.

Immediately to the right is a combination using six necktie knots and a padlock.

Der Gürtel ganz rechts außen ist zur Komfortsteigerung, ob man es glauben will oder auch nicht. Wenn Fußketten eine gewisse Länge überschreiten, schleifen sie gern auf dem Boden, sammeln Dreck und machen Krach. Daher verhindert die mittlere Kette, daß die Verbindungskette zwischen den Fußgelenken auf den Boden hinunterfällt. Anstelle eines Vorhängeschloßsses verbindet ein weiterer Krawattenknoten die beiden Ketten. Dann habe ich eine weitere Kette angehängt, welche dann aus dem Photo herausführt. Ist diese sicher irgendwo befestigt, kann man immer noch bequem aber mit limiteriter Reichweite umherwandeln. Man braucht es eigentlich nicht extra zu sagen, wenn man das Kettenende nicht erreichen kann, dann hat man den Kettenschmuck halt zu tragen und ortsfest zu bleiben.

Far right the belt is for convenience, believe it or not. Foot chains above a certain length tend to drag on the floor, making noise and collecting dirt. Thus the middle chain lifts the chain part between the ankles off the floor. There is no padlock, but another necktie knot joining the two chains. Then I attached another length of chain which runs out of the photo. Connected securely somewhere I am still comfortable in walking around, but with a limited range now. Needless to say, with the far end of this chain out of my immediate control I have to wear this metal decoration and stay in place.
